DENNIS SCHRÖDER TEAMS UP WITH KATJES TO CREATE HIS OWN GUMMIES

Turning a childhood dream into a product with nationwide cultural impact

Some partnerships begin with a campaign brief. This one began with a childhood dream.

Dennis Schröder grew up loving Katjes and had always wanted to create his own sweets. Together with Dennis and the Katjes team, we transformed that personal ambition into a completely new product—developed through genuine co-creation, from the flavour and shapes to the packaging, positioning and overall campaign.

The result was much more than a traditional celebrity endorsement. It was an authentic product collaboration that connected Dennis’s personality and cultural relevance with the strength of one of Germany’s best-known confectionery brands.

For the first time, a Katjes edition prominently featured the Halal certification seal on the front of the packaging. This created a clear and highly visible message: Katjes no longer stood only for vegan confectionery—with this edition, the brand also made Halal accessibility part of the mainstream product experience.

Halal. Made in Germany.

Mative creates athlete-led co-creations and large-scale campaigns that turn cultural relevance into commercial impact.

CHALLENGE

For Dennis, creating his own sweets was a deeply personal project. As a lifelong Katjes fan, the brand had been part of his life long before he became one of Germany’s most successful athletes. The ambition was therefore not to simply place his name and image on an existing product. We wanted to develop something that genuinely felt like Dennis—something he would choose, enjoy and proudly share with his own community.

At the same time, the product needed to work far beyond Dennis’s existing fan base. It had to meet Katjes’ commercial standards, appeal to a broad retail audience and have the potential to become a genuine mass-market success.

The central challenge was to bring all of these requirements together: Dennis’s personal taste, the recognisable Katjes brand world, a strong retail proposition and a product that was both vegan and Halal.

The collaboration also entered the market at an important cultural moment. Basketball has grown rapidly in relevance across Germany, driven by the extraordinary success of the national team and a new generation of internationally recognised players. Dennis stands at the centre of that development. As a world champion, European champion, NBA veteran and German Olympic flagbearer, he represents ambition, leadership and success far beyond the basketball court.

Our goal was to use this momentum without making the collaboration feel opportunistic. The product had to remain rooted in Dennis’s real story and his genuine relationship with Katjes.

STRATEGY

FROM AUTHENTIC CO-CREATION TO NATIONWIDE IMPACT

Our strategy was built around the idea of true co-creation. Dennis was involved in the development of the product itself, helping to shape a limited edition that reflected his personal preferences and identity. This gave the partnership credibility from the very beginning and allowed us to tell a story that went far beyond a classic testimonial campaign.

The communication was led by two high-end cinematic hero films in which Dennis introduced the edition in his own distinctive style. Rather than relying on conventional product advertising, the films combined premium storytelling, entertainment and personality. They positioned the collaboration as a cultural event and created a visual world that felt unmistakably connected to Dennis.

The hero content was adapted and distributed across television, digital platforms and social media. Additional campaign assets extended the story across out-of-home placements, retail environments and point-of-sale communication. Large-scale displays created visibility directly at the moment of purchase, while strong nationwide listings ensured that the product was not only highly desirable, but also widely available. A dedicated Lidl promotion further expanded the edition’s retail presence.

The campaign officially entered the industry spotlight at ISM in Cologne. From the moment the product was presented, it generated significant interest among retailers, partners, media and visitors—providing an early indication of the demand that would follow.

To turn attention into active participation, we connected the launch to a large-scale consumer giveaway. Anyone who purchased the Dennis Schröder x Katjes edition and uploaded their receipt had the opportunity to win exclusive prizes connected directly to Dennis. These included signed basketballs, jerseys, sneakers and limited-edition product boxes.

This mechanic gave consumers an additional reason to purchase the product while creating a direct connection between the retail experience and Dennis’s world. Signed items and community activations added emotional value that could not be recreated through traditional advertising alone.

A major seeding campaign amplified the launch organically. We created 150 individually numbered collector’s boxes, each marked as one of only 150 editions. These boxes were never made available for general sale. They were sent exclusively to Dennis’s family and a carefully selected network of athletes, artists, entertainers and creators.

Among the recipients were Florian Wirtz, Said El Mala, Jonathan Tah, David Alaba, Deniz Undav, Kai Pflaume, Pietro Lombardi, Arda Saatci, Abu Goku, Riton and many more. Their social posts introduced the product to a wide range of communities across sports, entertainment, music and digital culture.

Instead of relying solely on paid distribution, the seeding strategy created a wave of genuine excitement around the collaboration. The limited availability of the boxes made them highly desirable, while the relevance of the recipients generated enormous organic visibility across social media.

RESULTS

FROM CULTURAL RELEVANCE TO COMMERCIAL SUCCESS

The launch exceeded expectations from both a commercial and a communications perspective.

More than one million units were sold within the first 12 weeks, demonstrating that the collaboration was able to convert cultural relevance and campaign attention into measurable retail demand.

Across media coverage, social content and organic creator amplification, the campaign generated more than 100 million earned-media impressions. The combination of high-profile seeding, cinematic campaign content, nationwide retail visibility and Dennis’s own reach created a level of attention that extended far beyond the traditional confectionery category.

The edition proved that an authentic talent partnership can achieve more than short-term awareness. By connecting Dennis’s personal story with a relevant product innovation, we created a collaboration that was credible to his community, commercially successful for Katjes and meaningful within the wider cultural conversation.

What began as Dennis Schröder’s childhood dream became one of the most successful and visible product launches of the year—a nationwide campaign built on authenticity, inclusion and perfect cultural timing.

Timing. Talent. Transformation.
